Mark — Mark 1:14-20 MRK_003

NET Bible Text

1:14 Now after John was imprisoned, Jesus went into Galilee and proclaimed the gospel of God. 1:15 He said, "The time is fulfilled and the kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the gospel!" 1:16 As he went along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew, Simon's brother, casting a net into the sea (for they were fishermen). 1:17 Jesus said to them, "Follow me, and I will turn you into fishers of people." 1:18 They left their nets immediately and followed him. 1:19 Going on a little farther, he saw James, the son of Zebedee, and John his brother in their boat mending nets. 1:20 Immediately he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him.

Simple Summary

After John is imprisoned, Jesus begins preaching in Galilee. He announces that God’s appointed time has come, that God’s kingdom is near, and that people must repent and believe the gospel. Then Jesus calls Simon, Andrew, James, and John, and they leave their work at once to follow him.

What This Passage Means

Mark shows Jesus beginning his public ministry with a clear message. After John is imprisoned, Jesus goes into Galilee and proclaims the gospel of God. This is God’s own good news, not mere moral teaching. Jesus says, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the gospel.” This means God’s appointed moment has arrived, and his rule is drawing near in Jesus’ ministry.

The right response is not delay. It is repentance and faith. Repentance is a real turning from sin and self toward God. Believing the gospel means trusting the good news God is announcing through Jesus. These two responses belong together.

Mark then shows what this response looks like in lived form. As Jesus walks by the Sea of Galilee, he calls Simon and Andrew, then James and John. Jesus takes the initiative. He sees them. He calls them. They do not seek him first; he summons them with authority.

Jesus says, “Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of people.” The center of discipleship is following Jesus himself. He also promises to change them and use them in his mission. Their work as fishermen becomes a picture of a new calling to gather people under Jesus’ authority.

Their response is immediate. They leave their nets, their boat, and even their father’s business, and follow Jesus. Mark is not making this a rule that every disciple must leave the same things in the same way. But he is showing that when Jesus calls, he must come first. The passage joins Jesus’ message and the disciples’ response. The kingdom announcement calls for repentance, belief, and obedient following.

Warnings, Promises, or Commands

  • Do not separate the kingdom of God from Jesus’ own person and authority.
  • Do not reduce the kingdom to only a future reality or only an inward feeling.
  • Do not treat repentance and belief as only inward feelings with no outward obedience.
  • Do not overread the fishing image beyond what the passage itself says.
  • Do not make the disciples’ leaving of nets and family into a universal rule for every Christian.
  • Do not detach verses 16-20 from verse 15; the call stories show the response Jesus demands.

How This Fits in God’s Plan

Jesus’ ministry begins when John’s preparatory role gives way to the promised next stage of God’s plan. The fulfilled time and near kingdom show that God is acting decisively through Jesus.

Simple Application

When Jesus speaks, the proper response is repentance, faith, and obedience. His call may disrupt routine work and family patterns, but allegiance to him comes first. Ordinary skills and daily labor can be taken up into his mission.
