In some passages it can refer more generally to beings or persons who stand in a special relationship to God, such as angels, Israel, or the Davidic king. Yet in the central Christian sense, the title belongs uniquely to Jesus Christ. The New Testament presents Him as the promised Messiah and also as the eternal Son who is distinct from the Father yet fully shares the divine nature.
