Bible Unit Calculator Formulas and Assumptions

Plain-language formulas used by the Bible Unit Calculators. These explain how manual values, unit constants, material densities, and modern estimates are combined.

Important: these formulas produce study estimates. They do not convert ancient economic value into exact modern purchasing power.

Weight conversion

quantity × unit grams = total grams; total grams ÷ 1000 = kilograms; kilograms × 2.2046226218 = pounds

Metal value estimate

total grams ÷ 31.1034768 = troy ounces; troy ounces × USD price per troy ounce = USD metal value; USD value × manual FX rate = converted currency

Wage comparison

quantity × unit wage-day estimate × manually entered modern daily wage = modern wage comparison

Volume conversion

quantity × unit litres = total litres; litres × 0.2641720524 = US gallons

Volume-to-weight estimate

total litres × selected material kg/L density = kilograms; kilograms × 2.2046226218 = pounds

Length and distance

quantity × unit metres = total metres; metres × 3.280839895 = feet; metres ÷ 1000 = kilometres; kilometres × 0.6213711922 = miles

Equivalent biblical units

base grams/litres/metres ÷ another unit’s grams/litres/metres value = equivalent quantity in that unit

The calculator page accepts simple URL parameters: calc, qty, unit, metal, and material. Worked examples use these links so readers can open the calculator already filled with the example values.

Assumptions

  • Ancient units varied by period, region, and standard.
  • Metal value estimates are not identical to ancient purchasing power.
  • Dry-measure weight depends on the selected substance density.
  • Hour and watch times are approximate and depend on daylight, season, and local reckoning.
  • Modern FX, metal-price, and daily-wage values are manually maintained in current-values.json.
