Pape, Eigennam. under the word Πτολεμαΐς), and Romans Ace, and by modern Europeans (Acre or) St. Jean d’ Acre (from a church erected there in the middle ages to St. John); it is now under Turkish rule and contains about 8000 inhabitants (cf. Baedeker, Palestine and Syria, English edition, p. 356): Act 21:7. (Often mentioned in the books of the Maccabees and by Josephus under the name of Πτολεμαΐς, cf. especially b. j. 2, 10, 2f; (see Reland, Palaest., p. 534ff; Ritter, Palestine, English translation, iv., p. 361ff).)
