Thayer's Greek Lexicon

ἡσυχάζω; 1 aorist ἡσύχασα; (ἥσυχος (equivalent to ἡσύχιος)); as in Greek writings from Aeschylus down, to keep quiet, i. e.

a. to rest, to cease from labor: Luk 23:56.

b. to lead a quiet life, said of those who are not running hither and thither, but stay at home and mind their business: 1Th 4:11.

c. to be silent, i. e. to say nothing, hold one’s peace: Luk 14:4 (3); Act 11:18; Act 21:14 (Job 32:7; ἡσύχασαν καί οὐχ εὕροσαν λόγον, Neh 5:8). [SYNONYMS: ἡσυχάζειν, σιγᾶν, σιωπαν: ἡσσυχάζειν describes a quiet condition in the general, inclusive of silence; σιγᾶν describes a mental condition and its manifestation, especially in speechlessness (silence from fear, grief, awe, etc.); σιωπαν, the more external and physical term, denotes abstinence from speech, especially as antithetic to loquacity. Schmidt i., chapter 9; iv., chapter 175.]
