λῃστής, ληστου, ὁ (for ληιστής from ληίζομαι, to plunder, and this from Ionic and epic ληίς, for which the Attics use λεῖα, booty) (from Sophocles and Herodotus down), a robber; a plunderer, freebooter, brigand: Mat 26:55; Mar 14:48; Luk 22:52; Joh 10:1; Joh 18:40; plural, Mat 21:13; Mat 27:38; Mat 27:44; Mar 11:17; Mar 15:27; Luk 10:30; Luk 10:36; Luk 19:46; Joh 10:8; 2Co 11:26. (Not to be confounded with κλέπτης thief, one who takes property by stealth (although the distinction is obscured in A. V.); cf. Trench, § xliv.)
